 What is it?

We worked with a group of adolescents to produce a short film about underage drinking and various social pressures a teenager might face. This film was interactive in the sense that viewers could choose alternate endings in each of the four scenes. This short interactive film served as the starting point for the DigiHealth program. The film was used as a discussion/thought prompt for participants to begin thinking about their own media and what they would make.

 What did you do?

DigiHealth was piloted in three contexts across Dublin. A four session, 50 minute model was used to deliver the workshop. Participants first viewed the movie in a class wide setting. After each of the alternate scenes were watched, a short discussion was started to check for understanding and get their reactions. The next session demonstrated the Tabletop movie making method so they had a clear understanding that they would be making their own alternate ending. With the help of the classroom teacher, students broke up in to small groups and drafted 1 minute scripts which were their own versions of the story. In the third session, students performed their scripts and the movies were roughly edited. The final session was a reflection on the process and a group wide viewing of the participant movies.

Reflection

This program was independently audited by an expert in health education and he noted that the level of engagement from the participants was much higher than in many other programs he had evaluated. This was the result of a blended approach to the use of media, technology, and the writing process. A main advantage of the Tabletop moviemaking method is that it offers fast visual feedback. Additionally the production process was telescoped from weeks to days, making it an ideal method for classrooms.
