 What is it?

The Clay Animation project is a digital literacy project where students make animated movies of clay characters to tell a story. The work integrates many curriculum areas - art, language, history, music and through the process students also develop many computer skills. The process requires a digital stills camera, tripod, microphone and animation software. elevate learning uses Frames software which is very user friendly and reasonably priced (for PC and Mac).

What did you do?

The process begins with a storyboard where the scenes, characters and plot are developed. The students then build the sets and characters and are then ready for the photography. Using a camera mounted on a tridop a series of photos are taken where there is a small movement of characters and props between each shot. The photos are then edited and imported into the software. Now the scenes are embellished with transitions, text and credits. The narration and background sounds are added and then the movie is rendered ready for display.

Did you enjoy it?

"since we've done this, Digital Photography has come in and is used in the school, in a big way, ...I'm very much a traditionalist, I was very much in favour of film, slide film, quite dismissive of digital photography, but since doing this I'm a convert. I have two digital cameras now and I use them at home and I use them here. Its had that effect as well." - Breandán Ó Móráin

"covered a lot of areas, different areas for the children to shine. If they were particularly good at one thing they are able to focus on that...it's a break from the routine and its cross curricular , so you cover your art your SPHC all that kind of thing. It covers so many areas in one go and its enjoyable, the kids throw themselves into it, they love it." - Heidi Mahon
