  What is it?

The vast development of digital learning over the past few decades has resulted in the need to understand this new digital language. As a result of this, digital literacy is going to be a new concern in the future, especially for communities in areas of social disadvantage, which is an issue that the Digital Hub are keen to address. In a direct response to this objective this project was designed around the Mission Maker software developed by Immersive Education.

What did you do?

Young people participated in a four day programme of experimentation and exploration of the purposes of play, the development of strategy and gaming techniques. Each participant then developed their own game. First, game objectives were identified. Next storyboards were drafted to outline the sequences of the game which were then designed using Missionmaker. Finally and most importantly, this collection of new and original games were played and enjoyed by the young people.

Did you enjoy it?

"...it was more hands on, more interactive, they told us what to do at the begining. The people that were there with us would design one at the beginning, show us what to do and then tell us, do it ourselves, so we had the freedom to do whatever we wanted... when you have to figure out what you have to do, its very hands on, you kind of absorb a bit more than when someone explains the stuff to you..." - Stanley Cooling

"I found is easy to learn, cause it was just really clear and I just understood... we all sat at a table and drew out our idea on paper what we were going to do and then we did that on a computer... they should join, its really fun and really easy to use, its really worthwhile doing..." - Alison O'Mahony
