  What is it?

Summer is about being outside come rain or shine and in 2006 we wanted the Summer Project to be as active as possible. elevate learning tutors joined local Summer projects on their day out.

Tutors visited each group before the trip to brainstorm story ideas and introduce the children and project leaders to the equipment.Children used digital cameras and mini disc recorders to capture the day’s events or create a preplanned story.

These were assembled in the free software programme Photostory 3 in the learning Studio at The Digital Hub. All the work was presented at a showcase in the auditorium in August and each participant received a compilation DVD of all the different group’s photo essays.

What did you do?

The children came up with stories through the method of enacting a still image in small groups after a scene title was given to them e.g. “Travelling to the Sea”, “.

They developed the themes and suggested images and sounds to tell the stories.

During a day trip away, everyone took pictures, recorded sounds and conducted interviews.

Back in the Learning Studio the children worked in pairs to input the images into photostory 3 and added effects and transitions.

Text, narration and interviews were added to complete an exciting photo essay. If the sound needed a bit of editing, the free software Audacity was used to do this.
