Since 2002 we have worked with sixteen primary and secondary schools in the Dublin 8 area. We work with local teachers’ to bring 21st century learning into their classrooms. The programme has focused on assisting schools to integrate ICT across the curriculum, particularly in the areas of Literacy and Maths.
We have adopted a project-based approach to ICT, initially facilitating schools to use Lego Mindstorms technology to support storytelling. We have since introduced a range of other technologies such as digital video, photo stories, clay animation, podcasting and social networking software to teachers and students.
From the outset a major emphasis has been placed on continuing teacher professional development. This has involved a combination of withdrawing teachers from school to attend in-service workshops and in-class mentoring provided by a seconded teacher.
These programmes are being used to establish ‘best practice’ in digital media education. It is intended that successful programmes will be rolled out nationally.
